The historical novel describes the life in the eighteenth century, at the time of the French Revolution. Published in 1859, it tells the life in two cities, London and Paris, the first one? symbolizing in some way the peace, the simple and ordered life; while in the second reigns the agitation, the challenge and the chaos, in a time of drastic social changes.
